"DEAN" would probably resent this compiler having included her original given name, as she once told me that she hated the name Hazel. She said that upon her marriage, she had her given name changed to DEAN "legally and otherwise". However, since this is a genealogy page, and documents prior to her marriage may show the name Hazel, this compiler decided to include it with an explanation. Her original middle name of Dean, was also her father's middle name.

Dean graduated from Shortridge High School in Indianapolis, Indiana. She attended Vassar College. She also attended Columbia University in New York City.

Prior to her marriage, Dean lived on one of her family's mahogany plantations in Nicaraugua, during the same time as her future husband served in Puerto Rico. After her marriage to Robert Tyndall, the couple lived in the Spellman home at 2016 N. Meridian Street, in Indianapolis.

Dean was a member of the the Woodstock Club, Dramatic Club, and one of the Board of Directors of the Indianapolis Art Association. Many of her water colors have hung in the Art Museum of Indianapolis (now known as the Indianapolis Museum of Art).

Dean had an interest in family history, and had made a trip back to Schaumburg-Lippe, the origin of our mutual Lohmeier ancestors. She told me that unfortunately nothing was found about our ancestors.

When Dean died in 1969 the Indianapolis Star newspaper had a large article about her life on the front page of the newspaper.

In the 1944 picture of Dean (below), she has her hand on her chin. She was participating in a War Bond drive, at the L. S. Ayres "Tea Room".
