In Aug 1875 he started working as a surveyor for the Texas Pacific Railroad Co. In 1876, he worked at various oil fields in Bradford and Oil City and other places in PA. In 1877, he worked as an invoice clerk for a wholesale dry goods dealer in PIttsburg. In 1880, he moved to Detroit, MI and started working for The Michigan Stove Co where he rose to the position of confidential secretary to the vice-president. He was a director of the Merchants' and Manufactures' Exchange, president of the National Adjuster Co, a member of the board of managers of the Detroit Credit Men's Association and a member of the board of Administration of the National Credit Men's Association.
