Harriott (Hattie) Melvina Benedict was born January 6, 1859 when her father was attending Case Medical School in Cleveland, Ohio. With the coming of the Civil War after his graduation, her father volunteered in the Union army and served the duration of the war. The thought of losing her father apparently bothered her. In one of his letters home to his wife, Doctor Benedict mentions that Hattie and her older sister Mary had asked about death.

Hattie married Henry W. Owen on October 14, 1881. He developed tuberculosis, so they moved to Fort Collins, Colorado, where Henry became the County Surveyor for Weld County. He developed the town’s first waterworks, located on a creek behind above the town. His health improved in the dry mountain air, and he became quite well. However, when they returned to Ohio for Henry’s uncle’s funeral, he contracted pneumonia after standing hatless in the rain at the cemetery and died soon after.

She returned to Ohio, and married William B. Benham on September 28, 1897, but they never had children. After William’s death, she lived with her sisters and niece in her father’s house. In later years became incapacitated by Alzheimer’s. Hattie died June 6, 1952 in Norwalk.
