Harriet N. Ross, daughter of John and Rebecca (Conkling) Ross was born about 1842 in Butler County, Ohio. In 1868, in Butler County, Ohio she married Edwin W. Brown. Butler County deeds show that Edwin purchased land on 26 January 1871 in Oxford Township. He sold the same land on 19 March 1873. The 1873 deed said that the family was living in Shawnee County, Kansas at that time. The family remained in Kansas for a short period of time. They then returned to Oxford, Ohio then moved to Indianapolis, Indiana. It was in Indianapolis that Harriet died in 1878. After Harriet’s death, the boys were sent to live with their aunt, Myra Brown Oxford (Butler County), Ohio. The 1880 census shows Kent and Thane living with their aunt. In 1882 the boys rejoined their father and the family again went to Topeka (Shawnee County), Kansas where they lived on a farm. By 1918, Edwin was living in Sawtell (Los Angeles County), California. Edwin is found in the 1920 California census as a resident in a National Military Home in Los Angeles. The children of Edwin and Harriet are named in the probate records of Harriet’s uncle, Pierson Cory Conklin. A memoir of Thane Brown provides much information on the family.
