Hannah Manorha Murphy was born about 1828 in Ireland. She immigrated to the US in July of 1843, during the Irish Potato Famine on the ship "Carroll of Carrollton"* She married James Edward Long, and they had four children. The family lived in Cynthiana, Harrison, Kentucky, from 1860-1870, and Margaret, Granddad Fred's mother, is listed as 14 years old in 1870. Hannah couldn't read or write. She died in 1886 in Bourbon County, KY.

• (Granddad McDermott's Aunt Hannah always told Miriam that if she wanted to trace the family she could join the Daughters of the Revolution, because her great-grandmother, "Honorha", was kin to "Carroll of Carrollton," who signed the Declaration of Independence. "Hanorha's" mother's maiden name was Carroll, and she married Daniel Murphy. She also thought "Hanorha" was born in Kentucky and her parents immigrated before her birth. Since many of the facts in Aunt Hannah's account seem to be questionable, it might be she had the name of the ship confused with kinship to the signer of the Declaration of Independence. It made a good story.)
