After leaving her husband sometime after 1830, Hannah and her children were supported on the public dole in the village of Royalton, Windsor, Vermont for a period of some years. Her daughter, Samantha Jane Buckland met and married Charles Lyman Russell while he was in charge of the town poor farm. He had converted to the Mormon religion and was baptized on October 9, 1842. Smantha Jane was baptized on September 1, 1844 and married Charles four months later. Hannah and her sons Alondus and James joined the Mormon westward migration, traveling around Cape Horn on the ship "Brooklyn" to San Francisco with funds provided by the Township of Royalton.
