I do not agree with the Find A Grave memorial page's attribution that Effie L Maitland was Guy's mother. I suspect the association was made based upon their being buried in the same rural graveyard. If there are sources to support this, please update this page.

My reasoning is as follows:

  • Addie Fox would have been about 8 years old when Guy was born in 1883 or 1884, so she was probably not Robert Maitland's first wife.
  • Guy's obituary does not mention his mother surviving his passing. Effie L Maitland (buried in the same plot as Guy Renwick, lived until 1949, so probably was not his mother.)
  • Robert Maitland is recorded as a widower in all of the census records I have found starting with the 1910 census, so again, Effie L Maitland could not be his wife since she was still living. In addition, she could not be the same person as Addie, since Addie died in 1903. There is a possibility that Effie and Robert divorced and she was no longer mentioned by the family. Robert could still be considered a widower since his second wife had passed away, and he had not remarried.

Based upon the above, I currently presume that Addie was Robert Maitland's second wife, and should be considered a step-mother of Guy Renwick. The identity of Guy's biological mother remains to be determined.
