Columbus, Mt; and The Billings Gazette, Billings, Mt; MISSOULA- Gertrude Harris Calhoun 96, of Missoula and mother of Helen Rich of Seely Lake died of natuaral causes Wednesday, Dec 22, at Marcus Daly Memorial Hospital in Hamilton.

Gertrude was born in Park City, (MT), the daughter of Anna (Meyer) and

Benjamin Harris. She was one of five children. She attended grade school through the eight grade and was graduated from Billings High School.

On Mar 1 1918, she was married to John Calhoun in Park City. Gertrude

went with John to various Air Corps stations during World War I. At the end of the war, they returned to Columbus to make their home.

They had three children, Helen, born June 3, 1921; Patricia born Feb 9,

1924; and John, born June 7, 1931.

Gertrude was employed by Stillwater County as deputy county treasurer and

county clerk ane recorder for 41 years, being elected to the later post a number of times. She was a charter member of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 34 of Columbus, and of the 8 & and 40 Salon 606 of Columbus. As a native of that region of the Stillwater and Yellowstone valleys, she was well-respected and formed many lasting friendships.

In April of 1989, she moved to the Village Apartments in Missoula to be

closer to her son and daughter. In this new location she made a host of new friends. Her interests were varied, from outdoor activities to her favorite card game, bridge. She was mentally sharp and physically active all of her life.

She was an adviser and companion to all the five generations of her

immediate family, and all of their friends. She was proud to be our chosen Queen of those five generations of Montanans, ans she had a special place in the hearts of each of us. Mom, Grandma, or "Nana", as she was affectionately called, will be sorely missed by everyone, but we're happy that she's "Home for Christmas".

Gertrude was preceeded in death by her husband John, and her daughter

Patricia. Survivors include her son, John, Portland, Ore, her daughter Helen, Seeley Lake; 10 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and 5 great-great-grandchildren.
