The Gibsonburg Derrick, 7 April 1898, page 1 col. 3: UP AGAINST IT How a Scott Township Farmer Went to Millersville to Sell Wheat. On Tuesday morning, March 29, George Zimmerman, a well known Scott Townshi p farmer, accompanied by David Holcomb, went to Millersville to contract som e wheat, taking a sample along. While there they met the hustling stockma n, John Fisher, who conducted them to a restaurant, where it is said, Messrs. Zimmerman and Holcomb invested five cents in crackers and proceeded to t he town pump for refreshments. Then they went to the Andrews store, and and upon the ir arrival Mr. Fisher excused himself, saying that he had to see to loading some hogs, bu t promised to be back soon. Messrs. Zimmerman and Holcomb grew tired of waiting and proceeded homeward , forgetting to sell their wheat, and upon arriving at the house they were m et at the gate by Mrs. Zimmerman, who invited Mr. Holcomb to dinner. Imagine Mr. Zim merman's surprise, for upon opening the door the first man he saw was John Fishe r, who was supposed to be in Millersville loading hogs, and to find his house fill ed with friends and the tables loaded down with good things to eat. Upon inquiri ng as to the cause of the festivities he was informed that it was his 52nd birthday ann iversary. Those present were: John Houtz and wife, of Helena; Mr. and Mrs. George Bo vie, Mr. and Mrs. John Leary and Jonathan Bonawits, of Rising Sun; Mr. and Mr s. Martin Eckert, Mrs. Chas. Eckert, and D Pember and family of Bradner; Messrs. a nd Mesdames John Fisher, F M Heminger, Wm. Garner, Jacob Bovie, David Bovie, Andrew Ke llar, H Calvin, W.B Plantz, Jacob Bowers, W Bovie, I.F Plantz, J Goodrich, D Holco mb; Wm. Kellar and family, Mrs. Nina Miller and daughter, James Horner and fam ily, Mr. Henry Bovie, Mrs. Chas. Kline, Misses May and Mertie Zimmerman, Amelvia Bo vie and Mr. John Immel. After partaking of the bountiful dinner, Mr. Heminger, on behalf of the fr iends, presented Mr. Zimmerman with a fine rocking chair, after which the peop le dispersed to their respective homes, wishing him many happy returns of the day.
