Facts and Events
George Stringer was born about 1822 in Worth, Sussex, England, and baptised at the parish church (St. Nicholas) on 8 December 1822, the son of labourer John Stringer and Ann. George has not yet been found in the 1841 census, however there was a John Stringer, agricultural labourer, living in Worth (specifically Crawley Down) with his wife Mary. A John Stringer married Mary Ann Brooker in Worth on 19 September 1830. It is reasonable to assume that this John Stringer is the father of George, living with his second wife after his first wife Ann died. An Ann Stringer was buried in Worth on 27 December 1822 and this may well have been George's mother, however viewing of headstones in Worth or further information is needed to confirm this. FamilySearch lists a marriage in Worth on 10 June 1814 of a John Stringer to an Ann Price, although she may in fact have been Ann Rice, there being other members of the Rice family in the area. So it is likely that George's parents were John Stringer and Ann Rice. George probably had at least two siblings, James who was baptised in Worth on 21 August 1814 (parents John & Ann), and a sister Sarah whose date of birth is currently unknown. No further information has been found about James Stringer so far. Some list him as marrying Caroline Cheeseman in North Stoke in 1834 but North Stoke is quite a long way from Worth. The information about Sarah is based on the fact that George had a nephew John Stringer b. abt 1838 living with him in the 1851 & 1861 censuses. There were two John Stringer's baptised in Worth in 1838-1839, one of whom was the son of a John and Amelia Stringer. This person has been found living with his parents in the 1841-1861 censuses and it is unlikely that he would have been double-recorded in the census 3 times. Another John Stringer was baptised in Worth on 24 June 1838 and FamilySearch lists his sole parent as Sarah Stringer. It seems reasonable to assume that John was born out of wedlock to a Sarah Stringer, and if he was the one listed as George's nephew that makes Sarah George's sister. No further information has yet been found about Sarah to corroborate this assumption. George also had 5 half-siblings (children of his father John and Mary Ann Brooker) who he presumably grew up with: Elizabeth who married florist William Balchin and moved to Hove; Ann who married Edward Howard and then labourer Jonathon Towes and remained in the Worth area; Jane who never married and was probably mentally impaired in some way; bricklayer William who married Elizabeth Brown and lived in Horley; and John who worked as a labourer, coachman and house painter, married Mary Holland and moved to Streatham. George was 22 when he married 20 year-old Mary Worsell, daughter of agricultural labourer William Worsell/Worsfold and Sarah Morley, at St. Nicholas Church on the 14th of April 1844. Witnesses to the marriage were John and Mary Stringer, probably George's father and stepmother. George and Mary had at least 10 children, all born in the Worth/Crawley Down/Turner's Hill area and baptised at All Saints' Church in Crawley Down. Their first two children James (b. 1845) and Elizabeth (b. 1846) died in their infancy. George was present when Elizabeth died of convulsions at 3 months old. Their third child Jane was born on 4 April 1847, followed by Richard in 1850. In the 1851 census George, Mary, Jane and Richard were living in Turners Hill Village with George's nephew John Stringer and a lodger named William Bridger. Like many men in the area, George worked as an agricultural labourer. Four more children were born to the couple before the 1861 census: George in 1852, Emily in 1854, Penelope Anne Sarah in 1857 and John Thomas in 1860. In 1861 the family were still living in a cottage in Turner's Hill with George's nephew John Stringer but daughter Jane Stringer was visiting at the home of Sarah Humphrey. The Stringer family must have known the Gorringe family by at least 1861, when Jane Stringer's future husband James Gorringe was working as a servant to a grocer and draperer in Worth. It is not yet known whether they moved to London together or at different times, but in 1865 18 year-old Jane married 22 year-old James at St. Stephen's Church in Paddington. George's wife Mary died on Christmas day the same year. She was only 38 and died from "gastric fever" with George by her side. She was buried at All Saints Church Cemetery, Crawley Down. In the 1871 census George and his children were still living in Turner's Hill. Eldest sons Richard and George were working as builder's labourers, Emily as a housekeeper, and Thomas, James and Arthur were still attending school. Penelope was in Paddington visiting with her sister Jane who by now had 3 children. Richard Stringer married Sarah Ann Stiles in 1871 and had five children. He lived and worked as a bricklayer in Turner's Hill for the rest of his life. Emily Stringer followed her sister Jane to Paddington, where she married carman and house painter Walter James Kelly in 1876 and had four children. John Thomas Stringer moved to Croydon, where in 1881 he was lodging and working as a bricklayer. Later that year he married Sophie Amey and had one child. Penelope Stringer had a child, Ernest, out of wedlock in about 1878 and the two were living with George Sr., George Jr., James and Arthur in Turner's Hill in the 1881 census. George Jr. was working as a bricklayer and George Sr., James and Arthur were working as agricultural labourers. Later in 1881 George Jr. married Ann Thomas. He had one son, continued to work as a bricklayer, and later moved to Horley. Penelope Stringer later moved to Paddington where she married Henry Way and had three more children. Arthur Stringer went on to marry Sarah Jane Wickham, have seven children and work as a stock man in the Worth area. George's son James William Stringer died of heart disease at the age of 20 and was buried in the churchyard of All Saints' Church in Crawley Down on 6 July 1882. A few weeks later on the 29th of August George Stringer Sr. died in Worth of peritonitis with his daughter Penelope at his side, and was also buried at All Saints, Crawley Down.
