At the age of 20 years George responded to the call of his county for troops enlisting August 17, 1861 as a private in company H. Seventh Pennsylvania volunteers infantry and in due time was made orderly sergeant. He was wounded several times and was confined in Libby prison. His second enlistment was in F company, Second Pennsylvania cavalry. He was honorably discharged June 28, 1865.
