George Russell and his brother John were among the first whitesettlers in eastern Tennessee. Their brother-in-law William Beanexplored the area with Daniel Boone and is described as the firstwhite settler in eastern Tennessee. Wm. Bean cleared land and built acabon on Boone's Creek in the area of the lower Watauga River in 1766.In 1769 he brought in his family from Danville, VA and soon after theywere joined in the Watauga settlements by the Russells and others fromsouthern Virginia. George was killed by Indians on 10 May 1797 in Grainger County nearRussellville, TN while on a hunting trip from his home, German Creek,in Grainger County, Tennessee with Daniel Boone.
