Died of wounds in Civil War battle of Chattanooga, TN. at age 21 (almost 22) with rank of private in Co. G of 10th Regt. IA. Vol. infantry (see Cloyd and Sam Braught in same unit at same time). IA Dept of Vet. Affairs record shows his enlistment at age 19 on 29 Aug 1861 at Iowa City, IA. There could be confusion regarding his birth location, given here as Indiana (relative of Shelbyville, IN Ruggles families), but enlistment site is IA, and other Ruggles families lived in IA, so the IA birth state is used here and should be considered with strong caution for now.
