Facts and Events
George was reported to have been born in Lancashire England. He emigrated to the U.S. sometime before 1880. We know this because his first child, Jessie was born in Chicago in that year. He was a part owner of Diener and Robinson Stone Yard near Grand Central Station at Harrison and Wells in Chicago. One of his sons, George Jr. was killed in an accident there. It was reported that he fell into a rock crushing machine. The stone yard was said to have supplied material to the Monadnock Building. That building is listed on the National Historic Registry because it was the tallest builging is Chicago with floors being supported by the strength of the wall material (brick and stone) rather than by a metal inner structure. There is reported to be a commemorative plate naming Diener and Robinson hanging in that building. George also sang on street corners with the Dwight Moody and Ira Sankey evangelists. Dwight Moody later established the Moody Bible Institute in Chicago with the help of Sankey. Sankey is the writer of numerous religious hymns and was said to have a powerful singing voice. The group sang as away of attracting people to the ministry. George was also a 32 degree mason. It is said that he was also awarded his 33 degree but he died before he could have it awarded to him in Boston.. He was only thirty nine years old at his death. He is buried in Oakwoods Cemetery in Chicago Il. |
