George spent most of his young life with his Grandmother Margaret O’Brien Reddin and his Aunt Mary Reddin. He received his schooling at St. Martin's School, Cascade, Iowa. He was a well known baseball player when a young man, both in Cascade, Iowa and Kadoka, South Dakota. According to George's marriage certificate, he married Ethel Viola Nafe at Cherokee, Iowa. Ethel had made her home with the Hikock family. George homesteaded at Kadoka, South Dakota in the early 1900's. He was living there before 1914.

(Taken from the Cascade Pioneer- local paper) GEORGE RICE MARRIED After arriving at Cascade the first of the week from Kadoka, South Dakota George Rice suddenly left again for the west and his friends were mystified but somewhat suspicious. Suspicions were well founded when George arrived on Friday with his bride. He was married on Thursday at Fort Dodge, Iowa to Ethel Nafe. While a native of Fort Dodge, Mrs. Rice had lived a number of years on the ranch of her foster parents Mr. and Mrs. Hickok where she and Mr. Rice met. Mr. and Mrs. Rice have settled down to housekeeping in the handsome new home on the Patterson ranch in Hazel Valley and are heartily welcomed as new residents of this community.

In a few years George and Ethel move to Kadoka, South Dakota and took up homesteading. In 1908 George was at Kadoka , South Dakota looking for land and sent word to Tom that there was a butcher shop for sale, he should come and take a look. Tom worked in the butcher shop before he was the Marshal. Some years later Thomas and Anna Reddin received word that Ethel had left George with the children. He asked the Reddins to take them in but it was during the depression. They went to Dubuque to see if they could put them in St. Mary's home but being out of state, they were turned down. George hired help but it didn't work out. He put his son John in Boys Town and the girls in Good Shepherd Home, Omaha. He came to visit them each year. When the oldest daughter reached 18 she left, found a job and got the next sister out and they in turn took care of the last sister. George stayed on the ranch at Edgemont, South Dakota until he passed away in 1944.
