George Pitman was born in Cambridge City, August 26, 1848, and after an illness of three days from a stroke of appoplexy, died November 26, 1893, aged 45 years and 8 months. He was married to Miss Sarah J Cooper, June 29, 1876, who with two daughters - Bessie and Jessie, aged 15 years - survive him. With the exception of a few years at Indianapolis, he has spent his life in Cambridge City. He was a private in Company H., 147 Indiana Volunteer Infantry. He was a painter and wall decorator by trade, and always an industrious worker. He was of a quiet unassuming disposition, avoided ostentation or display, would suffer inconvenience rather than offend, loved his home and family, ever faithful to them, and lived only for their comfort and happiness. While he was only a late professor of religion, he has been a regular attendant at the Sunday School and church services for many years. Funeral services were conducted at the Baptist church on Tuesday afternoon, by Rev. W.H. Sands, in the presence of a very large audience of friends. Cambridge Post, G.A.R., of which he was an esteemed and active member, acted as an escort and performed the ceremonies of the order at the grave.
