George, despite the fact that his father was killed in action 1862, or perhaps because of it, entered military service in Co. A. of the 18th NH Vol Reg. He was one of many who answered Pres. Lincoln's call for 1.2 million soldiers in 1864. Or perhaps, he was one of those drafted. This was the final push to bring the war to a close. He was probably entitled to either the $800 bounty or $1000 bonus paid by the town to those who enlisted or were drafted into service. During his service, he contracted a disease. While he completed his service in the 18th NH Reg., being mustered out 3 Jun 1865, owing to the disease, he was "unable to perform any hard labor."
