George W. Meeks killed in battle, Petersburg, Va. July 20,1864, age 20 This is according to the Meeks family Bible record sheets. Probably in the possession of one of Sampson Meeks' son (Probably Scott Meeks) Battle was the Petersburg Campaign, a series of military operations in Southern Virginia, 1864-65, during the final months of the U.S. Civil War, culmination in the defeat of the South. Petersburg, an important rail Centre 20 miles southeast of Richmond, was a strategic point for the defense of the Confederate capital. In June 1864 the Union Army began a siege of the two cities, with both sides rapidly constructing 35-mile-long fortifications. In a series of battle that summer, Federal losses were heavy, but by the end of August, Gen. Ulysses S. Grant had crossed the Petersburg-Weldon Railroad.
