Facts and Events
George Lightcap was born January 27, 1844, the son of Levi Lightcap and Mary Smith, in Seneca County, Ohio. In 1849, Levi moved his family to Wood County, Ohio, and in June 1855, began a move to Iowa. On the way to Iowa, the family stopped to visit Mary's parent's, Christian Smith and Rebecca Firestone, in Boone County, Indiana. Christian Smith offered Levi forty acres of land. This proposition was accepted and Levi Lightcap and his family resided in a house situated about one mile northeast of North Judson, Indiana. On January 3, 1864, George Lightcap enlisted as a private in Company K, Twelfth Indiana Cavalry and served until the end of the Civil War. He was honorably discharged at Vicksburg, Mississippi, on November 10, 1865, with the rank of corporal. George married Rhoda Ellen Herod on March 21, 1868, in North Judson, Indiana, by Reverend Jacob Hershey. |
