George Ickes, one of the oldest pioneers in this county died at his home two miles south of Gibsonburg, Sunday Dec. 21, 1890, aged 90 years, 4 months and 7 days. He was married to Margaret Croyle in 1822. She died April 18, 1867. He came to Ohio in 1832 and settled on the farm in Madison Township where he has since resided, making 58 years residence in this section. To Mr. and Mrs. Ickes were born 13 children, 8 of whom are living. There are also 58 grandchildren, 57 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild. The surviving children are: Henry Ickes, who resides here; Mrs. Catharine Burket, of Washington township; Mrs. Barbara Van Tine, of this township; Mrs. Sarah Miller, residing east of Helena; Michael Ickes of Nebraska; Mrs. Margaret Brubaker, of near Gibsonburg; Mrs. Sophia Roseborough, of this township and George Ickes Jr of Grand Rapids MI. The deceased possessed an exceptionally strong and robust constitution, and was an industrious man. He was ill five weeks, and death seemed to result from a general exhaustion of physical vitality. The funeral services took place yesterday at noon at the Reformed church in Helena, and were conducted by Rev. R. B. Olive, of the M.E Church, this village. Burial in Metzger cemetery. |
