Hulses in Albany city directory: George Hulse 1876-1879 at 266 Lumber and later Livingston Ave. Charles Hulse 1873-1878 at 683 Broadway Catharine Hulse, widow 1880-1886 82 Canal It can't be deterimned whether Catharine is the widow of George or Charles Hulse - or neither

Late breaking news: pouring over the Albany city directories from that time period reveal that, in 1869, a George Halse was living at 266 Lumber. The 1874 directory lists a George Haltz at that same address. These are certainly the same as George Hulse in the late 1870s but still does not connect this George Hulse/Halse/Haltz to Joseph Hulse - although it does put this George Hulse in Albany at the time of Joseph's birth (1871) as we expected.

The remaining problem is that there is no one of any of these or any other similar names in Albany after 1879. Checking land purchases and sales for that time period gives no results - they may have rented? It's still quite possible that George Hulse died around that time despite his young age. Maybe they moved in with parents? There are several other Halses in Albany during that period. Also the family may have been destitute, esp. given that Joseph Hulse lived in his father-in-law's house during his entire marriage.

266 Lumber (later Livingston) was in the 8th ward of the city of Albany but the 1870 census for that ward alone still contains over 140 pages of names.
