From Brick Church Records: 535 Born December 30, 1844 William Hoffman and wife, Saloma Clapp one son baptized May 18, 1845 by G. Wm. Welker and named George Harpine Welker. Sponsors were the parents.


Notes from Bob Ingle, RootsWeb: George came to West Tennessee in 1857 and on to Johnson Co, Illinois in 1862. Enlisted in the Union Army in Jan 1863. Was with Sherman's Army on his march to the sea serving with Morgans raiders. He was captured and served 7 months in prisons including Andersonville, GA. Florence, AL. Goldsboro, NC. He escaped and rejoined the army. Mustered out a Springfield, IL June 1865. Where he met and married Mary Ann Jones. He engaged in the blacksmithing business and farming. Lost an arm to a saw mill. Elected assessor and treasurer of Johnson Co in 1902
