George was admitted to White Hall Soldiers Orphan School 9 April 1873 and graduated when he was sixteen years old.

In 1881 he joined the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad and advanced to become an engineer.

    GEORGE W ENGLISH of Harrisburg an expert engineer on the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad was born December 4, 1863 near Fairview, Perry county, son of George W English, a native of Rhode Island whence he migrated to Pennsylvania. George W English Sr married Harriet E daughter of James Hoon of Oberlin Pennsylvania. Mr Hoon served in the civil war and died at the close of that struggle. The death of Mrs Hoon occurred in 1902.

    George W English, son of George W and Harriet E Hoon English was educated at the White Hall Orphan School, whither he was sent at seven years old, remaining until the age of sixteen. After leaving school he was variously employed until 1881 when he entered the service of the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad Company, being first employed in a humble capacity at the round house Harrisburg and advancing through the different grades until he was made fireman on the engine run by James Trego, a freight engineer, He was next promoted to the position of fireman of the passenger service both in Pennsylvania and on the seashore division in New Jersey, running from Camden to Ocean City. In 1903 he was promoted to the position of engineer and is now running in the Rutherford yards of the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad Company having a record of twenty six years continuous service. He has been a resident of Harrisburg since 1880 and is the possessor of a comfortable and attractive home in that city. He belongs to the Railroad Relief Association and affiliates with the Democratic party but mingles little in political affairs his home and family being his chief concern. He is a member of the Presbyterian church.

    Mr English married November 2 1886 Anna Elizabeth, born September 11, 1866, daughter of Jacob L and Anna Eliza Beard Rehrer of Middletown, Pennsylvania, and they have been the parents of two children: Harriet Edna, born 1887, and George W., born September 13, 1902, died October 8, 1902. The daughter Harriet Edna was educated in the schools of Harrisburg and on November 15, 1904 was married to William M., born March 4, 1876 in Franklin county, son of John M and Mollie E Shoemaker Augenbaugh. William M Augenbaugh is a fireman on the Philadelphia & Reading Railroad. During the Spanish American war he enlisted June 23, 1898 at Columbus Ohio in Company L, Eighth Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, served in Cuba and was engaged with his regiment in the battles of San Juan Hill Seville El Caney and Santiago. He was honorably discharged January 18 1899.
