Dr. George E. Coon, 88, Milton, who practiced medicine in Rock County for 40 years, died at 11:30 a.m. Sunday in a Janesville nursing home. He was a patient in Mercy Hospital from Sept. 24 until being removed to the nursing home a week ago.
George E. Coon, son of George Nichols and Melissa Clarke Coon, was born April 20, 1870, on the Rock River Road near Newville. The family moved to Milton Junction when he was 11 years old.
He attended Milton Academy and Milton College and was graduated from Physicians and Surgeons College, University of Illinois in Chicago, April 19, 1898. Until he retired he was affiliated with American Medical Assn., State Medical Society and Rock County Medical Society. He was Milton Township health officer for many years.
He married Nettie A. Crandall, Milton Junction, Sept. 18, 1895. For three years while he attended medical college the couple lived in Chicago. He practiced in Hanover and Rockdale until 1900 when he began practicing in Milton Junction.
Dr. Coon served as trustee of Milton College and was director of Milton Junction State Graded School board for six years. He had been president and secretary of Milton Junction Commercial Club.
A life member of Milton Junction Seventh Day Baptist Church he served as treasurer and trustee for 50 years. In his youth, he was organist and chorister and sang in the choir.
Since the death of Mrs. Coon in 1949 Dr. Coon lived with his son-in-law and daughter, Prof. and Mrs. Leland B. Shaw, Milton. He spent winters in Riverside, Calif.
Surviving are the daughter, Mrs. Shaw, Milton; a son, Dr. George Wayland Coon, Riverside; five grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Milton Junction Seventh Day Baptist Church, the Rev. Victor Skaggs officiating. Kenneth A. Babcock gave the song service and Mrs. Edward R. Hull presided at the organ.
Burial was in Milton Junction Cemetery, pallbearers were Wesley Loofboro, J. E. McWilliam, Floyd Vincent, Jess Babcock, John F. Randolph and William Antisdel.
