Copied fr http://www.bgsu.edu/colleges/library/cac/ms0797.html: Another sequence of correspondence coincides with the period when the newly married George and Mattie Banks were homesteading in Kansas. Although the majority of the letters are written from family members in Ohio to the couple, there are numerous references to events, both at home and in Kansas, a few letters are included that were written from Kansas back to the family.

See the historical story of George's service in the military and in the service as President Lincoln's bodyguard in the Historical Stories link on the Home Page..

Garnett, Anderson County, Kansas 1880 United States Census George Banks, self, M, W, 36, Oh, farmer Brithplace of father/mother: Ohio Martha Banks, wife, F, W, 33, Oh, keeps house, Birthplace of father/mother: Ohio Ada Banks, dau, F, W, 8, KS, Birthplace of father/mother: Ohio Pearl Banks, dau, F, W, 2, KS, Birthplace of father/mother: Ohio

More research is needed to establish Ada Banks as their child. She is found nowhere else so far. Ada was born abt 1872; George and Martha did not marry until 1874. Also, in the following 1900 census Martha says she has had 6 children. The six are Bertha, Pearl, Minnie, Jennie, Grace and Raymond with no mention of an Ada. Martha's parents' birth location is an error and possibly indicating Ada as a dau is also an error. Another possibility is that George was previous married and Martha is his second wife and step-mother to Ada. Ada was too young to be on the 1870 census and may have been married by the 1900 census.
