Facts and Events
Friederich Luyt arrived in 1735 from Konigsberg on board the 'Petronella Alida' as a soldier, in the service of the Dutch East India Company. He became a burgher in 1746. He was a builder and joiner. On becoming a burgher of Stellenbosch, he changed his name from the German spelling to the Dutch, thus Friedrich Leitt became Fredrik Luijt (now spelled Luyt). He signed a land grant in Stellenbosch as "Fredrik Leitt". |
