Frederick was a Railway Engine Cleaner, Caretaker, Shoelaster. According to Evelyn Jefcoate, her father was invalided out of the army following action in the Boer War 1899-1902. Frederick and his wife worked in service as a caretaker of a private school at 27 Belsize Park, Hampstead, London. The children were fostered out most of the time because there was no place for them at the school.
