On 18 January 1900 The Philadelphia Inquirer ran the following story, headlined “Father Searching for Missing Son”:

"For more than three months Peter Clare, living at 1220 Mercy street, has been searching for his son. He has followed out nearly a hundred different clues without success and the police have also been unable to find the boy. Mr. Clare asks The Inquirer and its thousands of readers to assist him in recovering his long-lost child.

The boy's name in Frank B. Clare. He is 18 years old and is very large for his age. More than a year ago Frank suffered from an attack of typhoid fever. He seemingly recovered, but he had a relapse in a short time and since then his mind has been slightly affected. The physicians told Mr. Clare that his boy's mind could be restored if he was given the proper treatment. Consequently Mr. Clare placed his son in the Philadelphia Hospital, where he remained for some time.

Frank grew so much better that the doctors in charge decided to grand his request to pay a visit to his parents. Frank was given a furlough and he went to see his father. When it became time for Frank to return to the hospital his father gave him money to ride there.

Believing that his son was at the hospital Mr. Clare felt very happy to think his boy was recovering. But in a few days a friend told Mr. Clare that Frank had been seen on Broad street. The alarmed father rushed to the hospital and found that Frank had not returned from his furlough. Since that time the boy has not been seen by his parents. Mr. Clare says as his son has been away from home so long he is afraid some sad fate has befallen him.”

A followup story appeared on 21 January 1900:

"Peter Clare, of 1220 Mercy street, has found his long missing son, Frank B. Clare... Yesterday Mr. Clare received word that Frank was at the House of Correction. He had been picked up by a policeman and as he could not give any satisfactory account of himself Magistrate Moore sentenced him to the institution. Mr. Clare will leave him there for a day or two until he can arrange to have the boy placed in a home, as his mind is unbalanced and he needs medical attention."
