Taken from Cape Jack Road by Evelyn DeCoste:
"DECOSTE originally COSTE. Acadians descending form Francois Coste, born at Martiques, near Marseille, in Provence, in 1673, who settled at Port-Royal, in Acadia, by about 1695.
A skillful navigator, Francois Coste received permission to settle anywhere in Ile Royale in 1714.
He is considered to have been the first settler at L'Ardoise.
His grandson Claude Coste moved from Arichat to Fortune Bay, Ile St-Jean for several years before settling at Havre Boucher about 1784."
Baptized March 7, 1673, godparents were Francois Pourtan and Catherine Lavade at the Church of Ste. Magdeleine de I'isle du Martigue
Records show that he was baptized March 7, 1673- birthdate at this time (11-18-1996) is unknown.
He had emigrated to Port Royal Acadia by 1695. (now this area is known as Annapolis Royal Nova Scotia).
The eight children of Francois and Madeleine were born at Port Royal.
In 1713 the Treaty of Utrrecht gave Acadia to England for all time.
In 1715 the Coste family moved to Ile Royale-Cape Breton-to be under French rule there. At first they lived at Port Toulouse - now St. Peter's - where Francois was a carpenter and a navigator. Eventually they settled permanently a L'Ardoise (slate cliffs) of which place Francois is considered to be the founder.
Francois and his wife Madeleine were both enumerated there in Sieur de la Roque's census of 1752.
It is believed that both died a few years after that census.
