Francis Marion Vaughn Grandpa Vaughn, 83 years old, passed away at his home in Carnegie on Tuesday of last week. He died of old age. Grandma had lain down for a nap, and when she awoke found her helpmate was also taking a nap -- one of eternal peace. Funeral services were conducted at the residence Thursday morning by Rev. L. D. Hawkins, and the body was interred in the Carnegie cemetery. Francis Marion Vaughn was born in Missouri February 17, 1837, died June 29, 1920, aged 83 years, 4 months and 12 days. He was married to Susan Johnson November 23, 1864. To this union eight children were born, five of whom survive. Mr. Vaughn became a Christian in 1856 and has been a member of the Prmitive Baptist church since. He served in the Confederate army during the Civil War. Most of his large family of children, grandchildren and great grandchildren live in and near Carnegie. Tom Vaughn and family of Pocassett attended the funeral. ---Carnegie (OK) Herald, July 7, 1920

Military records show F. M. Vaughan enlisted in the Confederate Army Aug. 12, 1862, when he was 25, in Jackson County, Missouri. He was enrolled by Col. Thompson as a private in Co. D. Shanks' Regiment, Missouri Volunteer Cavalry. He was shown as being listed in the roll of Prisoners of War after Shanks' Volunteer Cavalry Regiment was surrendered in New Orleans on May 26, 1865, by General E. K. Smith, C.S.A. to Maj. Gen. E. R. S. Canby, U.S.A. He (and apparently the other prisoners) were "paroled" at Shreveport, La. on June 14, 1865.
