    Francis Pope suit for the estate of James Pope of Madeira. The complainant's father, Francis Pope, kept a tavern in Newport, R. I., and died about 6 or 8 years ago. He married a daughter of Walter Newberry. The complainant's brother Walter Pope died aged 15. The complainant has no no children. William Cranston of Newport Shipwright aged 80 was a nephew of Henry Stanton shipwright and of John Cranston, who married a daughter of Walter Newbury (Sr.). The complainant's godfather, William Bright, was a native of England. Among the deponents were: William Coddington of Newport gent. aged 63; George Bisset of Newport clerk aged 30; Henry Bull Esq. of Newport aged 86 and Adlem (?Allen) Browne of Providence. (Chanc. Proc. 1758-1800 No. 932.)

    Mr. Francis Pope of Newport was made a freeman May 4, 1703 and Sheriff on 3 May 1704 (R.I. Col. Rec., III, 473, 499). On 5 Jul 1715 it was ordered that whereas Mr. Francis Pope (late sheriff deceased) et al. had built a small room in the Colony House for keeping the court rolls and other records, 40/each was to be paid to Weston Clarke and Col. John Cranston for the use of the children of said Francis Pope deceased (ibid., IV, 195). On 4 May 1742 Francis Pope of Newport was made free of the Colony (ibid., V., 42).

    Walter Newbury of Newport was son of Walter Newberry also of Newport. He was a merchant and married 11 March 1706/7 Anne Rodman. Austin omits his children (cf. Austin's Dic., 137).
