Facts and Events
Francis Farquharson became the 5th laird of Finzean upon the death of his father Robert in 1742. He played a significant role in expanding and protecting the estate. Throughout his tenure, he added lands to the estate, including:
When he died, the Finzean estate comprised 8,000 acres in the parish of Birse, and 8,000 more acres in the parish of Lumphanan. To protect the estate, in 1874, he established a Deed of Entail, which prevented the lands from being divided and sold off in the future. He also made considerable improvements to Finzean House, adding a sizeable south frontage, and starting formal gardens (the holly hedges of which still survive today). Despite all that he did to improve the estate, he did not provide an heir. (Did he even marry?) References
