Facts and Events
Francis P. Bergin was born Nov. 27, 1859 in Philadelphia to Irish immigrants John and Mary Bergin. His father was from Kings County, now Co. Offaly, and his mother was from Queens County, now Co. Laois. John and Mary immigrated separately to Philadelphia around 1850 during the Great Famine. The Bergins had settled in the northwestern neighborhood of Falls of Schuylkill by 1860 and Francis' parents would live there for the rest of their lives. In 1884, Francis married Mary Regina Watson, another Irish-Catholic Philadelphian born to immigrant parents. The Watsons lived in Southwest Center City on 17th Street and in 1886, Francis and his new bride were renting a house just a few blocks south of there. Francis and Mary had four sons: Frank, Leo, John and Aloysius. Francis passed away on July 2, 1893 at the young age of 33. The cause of death was given as "phthisis pulmonalis," meaning tuberculosis. He is buried with his in-laws at Old Cathedral cemetery in Philadelphia. |
