Clipping with 1883 written in pencil found in family Bible:
On the 6th inst., at the residence of Mr. Mark Canning, in the city of Selma, Ala., surrounded by her daughters, Mrs. Canning and Mrs. John Massey, and a small circle of intimate friends, calmly and quietly, without scarcely a sigh or struggle, entered into rest, Mrs. FRANCES B. DALLAS, in the sixty-first year of her age. In her seventeenth year the deceased was united in marriage to Mr. Alexander Dallas, and though up to this time she had made no open profession of religion, it was not long before by the influence and godly example of her husband, she was induced to cast her lot with him into the fold of the Methodist Church, in whose communion for forty-four years she proved the sincerity and genuineness of her profession.
Just before the commencement of the late war, Mrs. Dallas was left a widow with ample means, and though by the disasters of the war and mismanagement of others the fortune run to waste, still she saved enough to educate her children and make herself comfortable all her days. Her piety was quiet but decided; not very demonstrative but very consistent; always upon the side of right and ready for every good word and work. It was my privilege frequently to visit her during her last illness. I always found her calm and confident. On one occasion I well remember when speaking to her of our future home and all the loved ones gone before, I remarked we had children and husbands and wives waiting our arrival, and I never shall forget with what emphasis she added, "And more than all, Jesus will be there." Hers, as I understand it, was a well rounded christian character. She lived for both worlds. Like Paul's model man, "Not slothful in business, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord," and like the woman in the gospel, "She hath done what she could," and like David, "Having served her generation according to the will of God, she fell on sleep and was laid to her fathers."

Another clipping with 1883 written in pencil:
Died We regret to announce the death of Mrs. Dallas, mother of Mrs. M. Canning, which occurred at the residence of the latter at 12 o'clock last night.
Mrs. Dallas returned from Texas several months ago, and has been a great sufferer for some time; so much so, that death was doubtless a great relief, and was met by that faith that only a christian can have, feeling that the future had in store for her nothing but rest and happiness.
Deceased was a consistent member of the Methodist church, and led a life to be envied by most of us. Her faith was in the Lord, and she is now a shining jewel in the diadem of Heaven.
The funeral will take place from the family residence on Dallas street at 4 o'clock this afternoon. To the distressed family we tender our sympathy.
"Tell Him, sweet friend, when you meet Him, In that bright eternal land, How you yearned so long to see Him, Kiss His precious bleeding hands."
