François Joseph Lehrer was known as Joseph. He was born as the second of nine children to Nicholas Lehrer and his second wife, Thérèse Spengler, on the 17th March 1835 in Dabo, which was a part of France from 1776 – 1871, before reverting back to the German empire and then becoming French again at the end of world war I, prior to Joseph passing away in Schaeferhof on the 20th August 1919.

On the 21st October 1861, when Joseph was 26 he married 21 year old Catharina Freyermuth in Dabo. Joseph and Catharina had nine children who were all born and raised in Dabo, which throughout their childhood was a part of the German empire.

In the family photo Joseph and Catharina are pictured with six of their nine children. I have guessed which children they are based on age differences and looking at facial features of Leon and Charles in photos of them as adults.

I would guess that this photo was taken in 1884 as their son Joseph was in America by 1885. Pictured from left to right;

• Back: Joseph, Catherine, Charles
• Middle: Catharina, Leon, Joseph
• Front: Louis Albert, Marie

Not pictured:

Either Victor or Joseph, most likely to be Victor as he was already married with a child on the way in 1885 and possibly already left for America.

Florent died in October 1877 at 6 years old. Based on the ages of the older siblings this photo was years after that.

Jacques was only 5 months old when he died.

A roadside cross erected by Joseph and Catharina in Kuhberg, with Alsatian German inscription can be seen on Google Maps.

My Translation needs some help, but what I have figured out is below;

This raises further questions.

• The Pfalz (Palatinate) is a region of Germany which Dabo was a part of at the time. It is heavily forested even today.

• I haven't located Sufzes Mountain (or similar spelling).

• Did Joseph get lost or injured? He would have been 60 at the time so it is unlikely he was conscripted into the army.
