"Finlay Malcom was a sea captain. He owned a trading vessel that plied between Scotland and America. Finlay set out for himself early in life as he is recorded in 1769 in Penobscot, now Castine, Maine, as an early settler on the Northern Bay "Majobigwaduce". He is recorded in his majesty's service at Fort George during the seige by the Continentals in 1779. Abt 1769, Finlay and his brother John were settlers of Northern Bay. He was also a member of the Penobscot Association Grant at St. Andrews in 1784. Finlay was a United Empire Loyalist and received a grant of land for his adherence to the King during the American Revolution. At Castine, Maine, Finlay met and married Tryphena Wardwell. In 1798, Finlay with his wife, Tryphena, and their family moved to Upper Canada. Before leaving Penobscot, the records show that he sold out his real estate holdings amounting to several hundred acres."
