Facts and Events
Dear Jim, You e-mailed me last May about Esther Hier and her husband Elizah Smith. I don't recall if I responded at that time as I had no info for you. However, in the last couple of days I have heard from a fellow researcher about Esther's sister, Fanny (Fanna M), and there is a reference to your Esther. I will quote what she told me: "A family legend said that Fanna Hier had Indian blood, though back in those days they didn't brag about it. She married Asahel Smith in Otis, Berkshire County, MA (record from town records) on 26 Oct. 1814. It is possible that the Smith family were temporarily in Middlebury, VT as an Elijah Smith shows up in the census there (Asahel was son of an Elijah, and had a brother, Elijah, who married Esther Hier. Apparently they were in Otis, MA by 1814 when they married." "Fanna Hier and Asahel Smith went to Lenox Twp., Ashtabula Co. Ohio apparently with his brother Elijah Smith, Jr. and his wife, Esther Hier. Asahel & Fanny Hier Smith had these children: Minerva; Anna Lovina (m. Sylvester Lewis, my husband's ancestors); Miles; Asahel; Solomon; Clarissa; Lucy Ann; Lorry Elmina; Sarah "Sally" Kingsbury; Eveline, Edward Z. Fanny Hier was born 21 Apr. 1797 and Asahel was b. 22 Jan. 1787. Asahel died 1856 and Fanny married late in life to an Elisha Robbins. She died 11 Oct. 1877."
