Email from a researcher: Michele----Eulalie was as you know married 3 times, lastly to Michel Deroin/ Drouin. In 1813 she agreed to take care of an old neighbor, Jean Baptiste Point de Sable, the founder of modern Chicago.. I am his biographer. The Barada were a prominent family, and I guess that when Point de Sable, a part-African trader, was infirm and destitute, she agreed to take care of him for the rest of his life. This document was recorded in St. Charles, and I have a copy. I think that Point de Sable was manumitted in 1746, per a document I have. He was an important trader in the Lake Michigan area, and although he has been the creature of many myth-makers, he was a very important historical figure. But I am probably the only person who knows anything about him that is documented. It is of great interest to me to know why Eulalie “adopted” this historical figure. His son, J Bte Point de Sable fils, worked in the Missouri river trade for Manuel Lisa and died [killed by Indians?] in early 1813. This left Point de Sable alone in the world, so he turned to his neighbor for help in his last years. He was truly a tragic figure.

I am delighted to hear from you. Folks in St. Charles have given me some valuable assistance, even got a couple of newspaper articles published about my research. Peggy Bradbury there, with whom I have lost contact, was especially helpful. I look forward to sharing information and will eventually publish my findings. Take a look at an earlier version of my research on www.earlychicago.com <http://www.earlychicago.com/>. I have worked closely with the Chicago Historical Society, whose leaders are very much interested in my work. I am sure that you and I can trade information that the world will welcome. Thanks for all that you do to remember those who came before us.

John

I have information on Eulalie Barada, 1788-? That you may not have. She was neighbor of my biographical subject, J Bte Point de Sable in 1813-1818. Interested? John F. Swenson, J.D. From http://www.earlychicago.com/encyclopedia.php?letter=b&sel=Barada#e731: Barada, Eulalie born in St. Louis about 1788; neighbor of Jean Baptiste Point de Sable in St. Charles, MO; important because she has been carelessly confused with Point`s granddaughter Eulalie Pelletier (born in Chicago, 1796) — confusion arises from a 1813 document, recorded in the St. Charles Co. archives, by which Point gave Eulalie (then married to her third husband, Michel Roi) all of his property in return for her promise to care for him for the rest of his life, feed his hogs and chickens, repair his house, and arrange for his burial in the parish cemetery. Contrary to the conclusions of most historians, who say that Eulalie `inherited` his wealth, the document clearly shows that he was destitute, to the point of having to borrow household utensils from Eulalie. Whether Eulalie kept her promises is not known; she was not recorded as a witness to Point`s burial, although she outlived him; she does not appear in records of the title of Point`s house or farm; also see Point de Sable, Jean Baptiste.
