His sister Hilda, her husba nd Bernard Dutra and their son Dennis moved into the house with Hilda's pa rents. At this time, Dennis Dutra was sick with leukemia and they thoug ht the fresh air might help him. Eugene and Irene had purchased Eugene 's grandfather's house (Antone Motha) at the head of Gulf Road. When he o riginally purchased the farm, Eugene had a couple of cows and would sell t he milk he produced to Gulf Hill Dairy. This continues until Gulf Hill st arts to require farmers to put in stainless steel tanks and refrigeratio n, squeezing out the small farmer. After Eugene's father dies, he and Ire ne buy and move into his father's house on Bakerville Road. While Denn is has already passed away, Hilda and Bernard are living in her father's h ouse. They have the first opportunity to buy the house, but don't want i t. When Hilda's brother buys the house, she and Bernard move to Bedford S treet in New Bedford. Eugene sells his grandfather's house that he was li ving in to Ruby Goldstein. Goldstein intended to develop it with some hi gh end homes. He has trouble with the Town relating to another developme nt and decides to sell the property to Kaufman & Broad (developers).
