Eugene Campbell was born February 13, 1919 to Rufus Elliot Campbell and Mabel Ethel Harrell. He was born premature; it was noted that he was so small that his forearm could fit within his father's wedding ring. During World War II, he enlisted with the United States Air Force. He served as a bombardier in the Pacific front, stationed for a time in New Guinea. Upon returning to civilian life, he was an accountant for Mobil Oil.
