Esther Eugenia Bjornberg was the teacher of Room 2, Riverdale School in 1903. In 1900 she lived with her mother and stepfather north of the school, still in Ward 34 but in ED 1118, which was a narrow strip between 113th and 114th Streets just west of Lake Calumet, in the vicinity of (in?) the company town of Pullman. This area was somewhat north of the school but since many of the kids and/or their parents worked for the Pullman Company at one time or another, clearly a reasonable commute.

Esther's parents were both born in Sweden, but her father Carl Bjornberg died before 1886, and her mother remarried Ernest Wahlgren in 1886. Esther had a sister Ellen.

By 1910, Esther was a teacher at the Chicago Training School for Missions (perhaps inspired by her time teaching in South Chicago?), where she appears to have been employed right through 1930 (and probably for life?). Her sister Ellen lived with her mother and stepfather until 1930 (stepfather only in 1930). She was a stenographer for a law office until 1920, and in 1930 an insurance agent.

Neither Esther or Ellen ever married. In Esther's case, this may have been due to her employment at the training school and the general disapproval of married women "deaconesses" (see the Training School links). They did, however, manage to make trips overseas. In 1905, Esther went to Germany (or at least returned from there), possibly on a mission related to her teaching duties? And in 1930, both Esther and her sister Ellen went to England (or returned from there).

Esther died in 1969 in Evanston, Cook County, and her sister Ellen died later that year in Chicago.
