His wife, "Mrs. Ernest Rutherford", was a surviving sister in Oma Jackson Bost's 1966 obituary.

RUTHERFORD, Ernest L. of Rockdale. Age 72. Died 2/28/1973 (Wed.) in Brackenridge Hospital in Austin, where he had been for 6 days. Services held at Phillips & Luckey Chapel, Rockdale. Burial in IOOF Cemetery, Rev. Millard Brown officiated. Phillips & Luckey in charge of arrangements.

He was BORN 3/3/1900 in Gause, but spent most of his life in Rockdale. Parents were M/M. David C. Rutherford. He was a salesman and collector, retired with the old W.T. Pearson & Sons Furniture and Hardware Store. Married Miss Tomie Jackson 2/21/1929 in Cameron. Preceded in death by a sister and 2 brothers, half-brother and 1 granddaughter.

SURVIVORS: Wife, Mrs. Tempie (Tomie) Jackson Rutherford of Rockdale; 4 daughters, Mrs. James (Mabel) McGoldrick of Temple, Mrs. Louis (Dot) Absnaider of Austin, Mrs. Clyde (Gloria) Waldrop of Austin, Mrs. Revon (Pat) Aunspauch of Buda; 5 sons, Ernest, Jr. of Austin, Bob of Conroe, Rudy of Austin, Douglas of Taylor and Thurman of SC.; 2 sisters, Mrs. Elmer Lee (Omega) Townsend of Wichita Falls and Mrs. Charlie (Alpha) Robbins of Rockdale: brother, D.J. (Buddy) Rutherford of San Antonio; half-brother, Lonnie Rutherford of Austin; 22 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren.
