Facts and Events
He isn't on the 1850 census with his family. We see him as a cabinet maker, age 22, in Fairfield Co., Oh. (p. 410) We find on the 1860 census, Ephriam Root, 33, Master Carpenter, in Rush Creek Twp., Fairfield Co., Oh. With him is wife Amanda, 29, b. Pa. and four children.[p 306] Sent to this author is an unsourced quote from p. 352 of a book, appears to be a history of Fairfield Co., or similar work, that outlines Ephriam's life. Because of the detail, we would surmise that Ephriam was giving the infomation himself. "Ephriam Root, carpenter, North Berne, Oh; was born in 1827 in Fairfield Co.,Oh; son of John and Magdalene (Richers)[sic] Root. His paternal ancestors are of the old English stock and his maternal, German. His mother was born in Virginia and came to this county about 76 years ago. Mr. Root, the subject of this sketch, was married in 1851, to Amanda, daughter of Philip and Sarah (Smith) Siefert, who was born in 1831 in York County, Pa. At the age of 5 years he came with his parents to near Somerset, Perry Co., Oh, where they remained about 2 years, then moved to Rush Creek Twp., Fairfield Co., Oh., remaining there until about six years ago, and then came to this township where they have resided ever since. They are the parents of six children, all of whom are living, Viz: Lovina, Sarah, Clara, George, Emma and Mary. The two last are twins. Three of their children are married, Viz: Lovina, Sarah, and Clara, two of whom live in this county, and the other in Roseville, Perry Co. Mr. Root learned the carpenter trade at the age of 21, and has followed it until the present time. We see Amanda Root, widow, on the 1900 census, age 69, with daughter Clara and son in law, George "Hillyard", in Berne Twp., Berne Precinct, Fairfield Co., Oh. (ED 4, p. 4B, fam # 77/79) References
