Engebret Torkelson married Kari Ellefsdatter in 1845.

Engebret and Kari lived a short time on the Foss farm in Sigdal, where they had their first child, Torkel. They lived there only a short time. They then wandered from farm to farm until 1852 when they received a servent (husman) position at Risbrudt on the farm Thales. There was an opening because Engebret's father, Torkel Olsen Risbrudt, who worked for Lars Thales, left Norway and went to America in 1852.

In 1853, Engebret Torkelson got homestead right to the Risbrudt farm in Norway.

In 1861, Engebret and his family left Risbrudt and went to America with his cousin Kristi Knudson Skorta.

When the family immigrated from Norway in 1861, they changed there name from Torkildsen (Torkelson) to Risbrudt. Customarily, they often had referred themselves to others as Engebret Torkelson fra (from) Risbrudt (the family farm from which they came) so when the came to America, they simply added the name of the farm from which they came.

Once in America, the first settled in Spring Grove, MN and following the death of the mother, Mrs. Kari Risbrudt, in 1864 and one child Helga in 1866, they moved to Winneshiek County, Iowa, returning to Douglas County, Minnesota in 1868.

The following year, in 1869, Mr. Risbrudt and his children moved to St. Olaf Twp in Otter Tail County, MN. Since there was no school there at the time, the eldest son, Torkel, instructed his brothers and sisters. Torkel also taught catecism to group meeting at the different homes in the neighborhood.
