From A History of Allegan and Barry Counties

In the year 1848, Caleb Ward purchased 120 acres of land on section 31 from D.S. Heywood, who had bought it of the government. Previous to the purchase, however, Mr. Heywood had made an arrangement with Melvin Hogmire to clear off a part of it, receiving for his labor a portion of the land. Mr. Hogmire at the time of sale had cleared about 30 acres, and Mr. Ward purchased his interest also in the land, and entered upon the cleared tract at once. His son, Emmet Ward, lives on the farm his father bought.
