1852 - Birth registered as Emma Fama.

Emma Mary Farmer was the daughter of Charles Theodore Fama and Emma Layton. They apparently used both Fama and Farmer as their surname on various occasions.

Emma's father, Charles Theodore, is listed as Theodore Fama in the 1851 England Census. He was born in Paris, France in 1830-31 and died probably before 17 Jun 1911. He is listed mainly in Australia as Charles Farmer. He was a butcher. Emma Layton and Theodore Fama were married 28 May 1851 at St. Martin in the Fields, Westminster, London, England (IGI).

Emma Layton was born in Hampstead near London, England, c1831-2. She died 16 August 1897 at 66 years of age in Redfern, NSW, Australia and was buried 18 August 1897 in the Church of England section of Rookwood Cemetery in Sydney. Emma Layton Fama's father was Alexander Layton, a brass founder, but mother's name was unknown on Emma's death certificate. Emma Mary was alive when her mother died. If the death certificate is accurate, then Emma Layton Fama and her husband, Charles Theodore Fama moved to Australia from England about 1856 (they were definitely there by 1862). It says Emma Layton Fama was a resident of Victoria for 20 years, then NSW for 15 years.

Charles Theodore Fama's parents were Philip (Phillippe) Fama and Helene Prague. Helene was his first wife. He later married Charlotte. Helene's name is listed on children's birth certificates. After Phillippe's death in Jun 1855 , his widow, Charlotte, is listed as being "fund holder" for Emma Mary and her two sisters. By this time, the remaining children have probably moved to Australia.

Emma Mary Farmer had siblings (all younger): Eugenie Fama, Theodore Alexander Fama, Helen (Helene) Farmer, Philip Fama, Ada Pauline Farmer, Samuel Louis Farmer and Henry Farmer. The Fama/Farmer spellings as they are listed on birth certificates.
