He was engaged in the manufacture of wire since boyhood, and has a natural aptitude for inventions. In 1884, Mr. Kilmer located to Chicago and subsequently formed the Kilmer Bale Tie Company which has a capital stock of $100,000 - in which company he is the principal stockholder.

This company had its offices at 21 Quincy Street, and its extensive factories are in Joliet, Il. It also has a branch in Cortland, NY. Due to his indominable push and energy, great success has marked the company. From the start, he has been President. The directors appreciate his conservatism and unerring judgement, wisely leaving the entire direction of the company to him - content with drawing their dividends. He may justly point with pride to the fact that his company has no liabilities.

Besides the manufacture od bale ties of various kinds, his company has recently entered the field in the manufacture of wire fencing of different styles, and the reception which their fencing has received in the market has been most gratifying to all interested. The factories are a perfect beehive of industry and an inspection of them is interesting.

Personally, Mr. Kilmer is a gentleman of culture, and while he is devoted to his family, he is also fond of society, enjoying having his friends spend an evening at his handsome home at 5735 Indiana Avenue in Chicago. This house was erected by Mr. Kilmer in 1893 and is architecturally a fine structure. In the rear are commodious stables. Mr. Kilmer is fond of horses, and drives a good one.
