Ellen Louisa Roney was born in Diggorran, near Rochester in Victoria, Australia on the 1st August 1870, to Peter Roney and Sarah Brookman. Ellen was born seventh of twelve children to Peter Roney (1828-1912) and Sarah Brookman (1835-1908).

Ellen was 16 when she married James O'Sullilvan at the Catholic Church in Nagambie, Victoria, Australia on the 28th December 1886.

Ellen and Jim had their first child, Patrick in Rochester, Victoria and then by looking at the birth locations of the fist four children you can see that within a ten year period they moved slowly north from Rochester Victoria to Urana, New South Wales, before stopping in Junee in New South Wales where most of their eleven children were born. This move north was occurring at a time when Victoria and New South Wales were still separate colonies, coming together as the Nation of Australia in 1901. Jim and Ellen continued north to eventually settle in Sydney with all of their family, bar the eldest, Patrick who had a family in Junee by this time.

Ellen lived 9 years past her husband, and died on the 26th April 1940 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia.
