Ellen (or Nellie) Moles was born on 3rd December 1890 at St Ippolyts in Hertfordshire, daughter of Annie Maria Moles, a domestic servant. The family lived on Blackhorse Lane, which formed the border between St Ippolyts and Hitchin, and Ellen was baptised at Hitchin on 8th March 1891. The following month she appears in the 1891 census living with her mother, grandparents and her mother's siblings at The Common on Blackhorse Lane in St Ippolyts.
Ellen's mother Annie moved away from the Hitchin area to Harpenden, where she married in 1899 and had seven more children. Ellen stayed behind being brought up by her grandparents, although her grandfather Thomas Moles died in 1895, such that Ellen was mostly brought up by her grandmother, Fanny Moles, who was the local midwife. Ellen appears (as Nellie) in the 1901 census living with her grandmother and various uncles, aunts and cousins.
By 1911 Ellen had left home and was working as a general domestic servant in the New Barnet area for a jeweller and his family. She has yet to be traced after 1911.
