    [states "World War I United States Army Officer. The son of General Alexander C. Oliphant and the grandson of General Samuel D. Oliphant, he was a 1917 graduate of Princeton University. He served during World War I as a 1st Lieutenant in Company B, 119th Infantry, 30th Infantry Division, AEF. He was killed in action near Ribeauvillé, France while leading his men against German machine gun nests. He was the first Army officer native to Trenton, New Jersey to die in the war. The American Legion Elkins Oliphant Post No. 93 of Trenton was named in his honor. "]
